As has happened in the past, I get an idea and it festers in my mind consuming my thoughts until I take action and try to translate the images in my head into photographic images.
After recently joining the Howick Camera Club and seeing their set challenges for each month, an idea struck me for the set subject of Fiery for October.
Not wanting to do what I predict most will do, that being photos of flames, sunsets and fire, I wanted to do a less literal image using fiery colours and expressions.
It was extremely easy to set this shoot up. Make up artists and models were onboard straight away and lighting was sorted thanks to my friends over at Helderlig Photography, who also came onboard – check out their shots on their facebook page by hitting that link. It started to grow from there and before I knew it the day of the shoot arrived.
Brigita Bell was one of our models, recommended to me by Adjoa from Xceptional Makeup (who was unavailable for the shoot). I also approached the lovely Kezhan from Makeup by K, who worked with me on the Pre-Raphaelite shoot. I loved Brigita’s fresh look, very modern, very Vogue. My concept for her was the fiery colour scheme and possibly adding in fire elements in post-production. I wanted a very modern fashion look.
Shannon (our hair stylist and second makeup artist) has worked with Roedolf and Adele at Helderlig on a number of occasions, and I often joke with her about the skills she can add to her CV – she is a great assistant. On this shoot we added ‘lighting technician’, ‘expert hair blower-upper’ and ‘professional fabric flinger’.
